Times-Union editorial board: Yes on Amendment 1

From the Times-Union editorial board:

Florida’s Legislature was long on principle but short on thought more than two decades ago, when it passed a campaign finance law providing tax money for some candidates who agreed to abide by spending limits.

And voters, motivated by the best of intentions, compounded the problem in 1998 by putting the concept in the state’s constitution.

That’s why voters need to approve Amendment 1 — which would allow the Legislature to repeal the campaign-finance law.

A dozen years ago, the state’s coffers were awash with money — and the prevailing thought was that lesser-known politicians needed help so they could compete with established, better-financed gubernatorial and Cabinet candidates.

Public financing, voters were convinced, would be the great political equalizer.
