Man found floating in Jacksonville creek identified

A man whose body was found floating Sunday in Jacksonville’s Pottsburg Creek has been identified.

The body of Joseph William Kates, 19, of the 200 block of Spruce Street was spotted by a boater about 4:30 p.m. just south of Atlantic Boulevard, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Rescue workers called to the scene in the 200 block of River Hills Drive declared Kates dead at the scene.

The cause of death is undetermined, though police Sunday said there were no outward signs of foul play. They estimated Kates had been in the water a day or more.
